Kenny Richey, the Scot on Death Row in the US, has launched an online campaign for support. Backed by Amnesty International, he hopes to recruit new supporters in the fight to clear his name.
Richey was convicted in 1987 for killing a two year old in an arson attack.
Having spent the last 20 years in prison Kenny Richey has never seen or used the internet. But now he is taking his campaign to two social networking sites. There he believes he can gain much more support for his cause. The pages have already recruited so-called friends ranging from Madonna and Simon Cowell to Annie Lennox and The Proclaimers.
Amnesty International who believe Richey has been the victim of what they call "shoddy justice" say the internet means those who are oppressed have the chance for their voice to be heard. For Kenny Richey, attempts to quash his sentence have failed so far. Last year an appeal court set aside his conviction. But in November, the US Supreme Court overturned that decision. Kenny Richey is appealing again and a decision is expected this Summer. Even if he wins that stage it will still be referred back to the US Supreme Court, which may take a year and then months further to set up a retrial.
Best Wishes
