Maurice Mason was introduced to (the victim) Robin Dennis by her husband Chris in September 92. A sexual relationship developed and Maurice and Robin had sexual relations several times, including Feb 8th 1993, the last day Robin was seen alive.
On Feb. 8 1993 Robin and her husband Chris, Maurice, and several others met at the house of Maurice's cousin and partied for hours. Some more than others. Chris had been drinking all day and night, from another party the night before, he never stopped drinking. Robin did not drink. After everyone was run out of the house around 2-30 p.m, Robin and Chris dropped another guy off, then Maurice, at his house. That was the last time Maurice saw Robin.
Robin was married to Chris, an alcoholic, who drank a 12-pack of beer daily. Chris has beaten and struck Robin on many occasions, injuring her repeatedly. Chris has similarly struck and beaten his first wife, and had beaten a friend into unconsciousness, before leaving him in the woods, apparently to die. Shortly before Robin was killed, Chris had convinced Robin to change her life insurance beneficiary from her father to him.
Robin, a 19-year-old female was found dead on Feb. 13, 1994 in an abandoned shed in rural Marion County, five days after she had last been seen. She had a fractured skull and lacerations on her scalp.
On Feb. 8, 1993, later that day, Chris said he passed out from drinkling too much. When he awoke, Robin was gone, and he threatened to kill her for abandoning him. Threatened to kill Robin, his wife, in front of four or five of his friends, at the house where he and Robin were staying for the past few days. Chris's friend drove him home that night. he reported Robin missing the next day.
The night before when Chris had become furious that his wife had left him, he said that he was going to beat her up bad, so she'd better have a good excuse, saying that if he found her, he'd kill her.
Chris's friend testified in court that Chris was drunk, angry and violent.
"He (Chris) was getting too wild to be at my house, I wanted him out of my house. I was scared. He was going, started drinking again, and kept saying over and over that he was going to kill her. He just kept getting madder, and he was stamping, and he was very angry, and I didn't want him at my house no more. I was scared."
There was a dispute about when Robin was last seen alive. Robin's friend reported that she saw Robin riding in her Buick with three black guys around 9.30-10.00 p.m, on the evening of Feb.8, 1993. She was certain it was Robin's car because one of the headlights was out.
Robin's car was recovered on Feb. 10 , 1993 in a field near the shed where her body was ultimately found several days later.
A deputy testified that he saw a black male in the area in the late afternoon of Feb. 8 1993, but could not identify the man as Maurice Mason, until two days later when he was shown a photo of Maurice.
On February 9th, 1993, a patrolman observed a pickup truck and a sedan, possibly a Buick, stopped in the area where the body was found, and two middle-aged white males talking to each other in the field.
In Robin's car police found blood which was determined to be the same as Robin's blood. Robin's friend testified at the trial that she had seen Robin sitting in the passenger seat of the car several weeks earlier, bleeding, because her husband Chris had backhanded her a few times. Another friend of Robin's also recalled this fight. According to her, Chris banged Robin's head into the dash four or five times. After that Robin came into the house with her face bloody.
To be continued.
