SERIAL killer Robert Maudsley today sets a new UK record of 28 years for the longest time spent in solitary confinement.
The 53-year-old has been locked up in a 10ft cell in Wakefield jail, West Yorks, for 23 hours a day ever since he smashed prisoner William Roberts' head and ate his brain.
Maudsley - dubbed Hannibal the Cannibal - had already killed one convict and tortured another. He was originally jailed for life in 1974 for murder.
Liverpool-born Maudsley can only exercise for one hour a day with six guards always at his side.
An insider said: "He has learned to get on with it. He'll never see life outside the four walls of his cell."
