Dear family, friends and supporters of the Lucasville 5 and other prisoners:
In honor of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a coalition of grassroots groups are planning a press conference followed by a rally at the gates of Ohio State Penitentiary (OSP) on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008. This year we will be kicking off a campaign for contact visits by family members for all death-sentenced prisoners.
At OSP, death-sentenced prisoners in Blocks B and D are permitted so-called “semi-contact” visits which allow hand holding through a slot. Death-sentenced prisoners in Block C are not permitted even “semi-contact” visits. Eleven states that have the death penalty permit regular contact visits with family members.
We are encouraging as many family members, friends and supporters as possible to gather at;
St. Augustine Episcopal Church
614 Parmalee Ave.
Youngstown (near St. Elizabeth’s hospital) at 12:00 noon, on Jan. 19. For transportation from Cleveland to Youngstown, call (216) 481-6671. The press conference will be at the church at 1:00 pm. Handwritten letters from prisoners or loved ones in support of contact visits can be brought to this event or sent to us at the address below in advance. For prisoners at OSP, the letters should be addressed to Warden Marc Houk.
We will then car caravan to the gates of OSP to hold a rally and to present the official letter of request from the mother of an OSP death row prisoner, along with all the other letters we have gathered. People are encouraged to bring signs and banners to the rally.
Prisoners at Mansfield and their loved ones should address their letters to Warden Stuart Hudson and send them to us. We will arrange for another spokesperson to present the collected letters to him. For Marysville, address letters to Warden Sherri Duffey and we will ensure delivery. You may also send them directly to those wardens but please time the letters so that they arrive on or after Jan. 19, to have a coordinated start to this campaign.
Our next action will be the National Unity Day of Action on Monday, Feb. 4, 2008 to put pressure on Governor Ted Strickland for amnesty for all prisoners with convictions resulting from the Lucasville uprising of 1993. Those wrongful convictions were based on perjured testimony without any corroborating evidence. On Feb. 4, we will flood Gov. Strickland’s office with calls, faxes, and emails demanding that he pardon all those with wrongful convictions from the Lucasville uprising. Go to governor.ohio.gov or write to Gov. Strickland at Riffe Center, 30th Floor, 77 S. High Street , Columbus , OH 43215-6108 , call (614) 466-3555 or fax (614) 466-9354.
Thank you, sisters and brothers, for being a part of this important movement for justice,
From the Cleveland Lucasville 5 Defense Committee
