I just spoke to Kenny and he is at last out of death row and in Putnam County Jail.
Kenny told me that they came for them this morning at 9.30 Ohio time.
He had just finally managed to get a dental appointment after waiting for weeks on it, when he was suddenly told that it was cancelled and he was leaving death row.
He said it was was pretty emotional leaving the other guys he had known for so long. He gave Big George Skatzes his blankets and a sweat shirt. He also gave him his fans. He gave Maurice Mason blankets too and a hot pot to him and to Abdul another inmate. He did mention another guy he gave stuff to but I can't recall his name. So while he was relieved to be leaving, there was the sadness about the people he was leaving behind. People who had been there all the time he was there.
Kenny had packed his own belongings and TV up to take with him but he was told he couldnt take his belongings with him and they wouldn't give him the money on his prison account.
They told him, "You will get your belongings when you get back here". Kenny told them he wasnt coming back there. He was on his way home.
When he told me that, I said "Oh that reminds me, I was talking to the Proclaimers and they sent you a good wishes message". At that he began to sing their song, "I'm on my way from misery to happiness today uh uh ".
He left Death Row with the clothes he stood up in.
Kenny told me he was cuffed and shackled and taken to a car, where he was strapped in with a seat belt.
He rolled his window down and stuck his head out of the window for the entire journey. For the first time in all these years he had wind blowing through his hair and he loved it. He made a joke about how he kept checking for big trucks, in case his head got hit by hanging out the window.
He has his own cell in Putnam but they do not supply cups it seems. He needs to buy one, which considering his money is over 100 miles away in Mansfield he won't be able to do for some time.
Though he does have a water fountain in his cell which has fresh water in it. Which is yet another luxury for him since the water in Mansfield was not very pleasant.
He wished my middle daughter happy birthday too. In all he was in pretty high spirits.
Kenny said to send his love to everyone. He thanks everyone so much for their love and continued support.
He wants to thank Charlie and Craig Reid from the Proclaimers who have been so very supportive. Kenny sings their songs a lot and has been a huge fan for a long long time. Hopefully he now doesn't have 500 Miles to walk. (smile)
We are not finished this journey yet but now things are moving in the right direction.
Kenny wants his trial and he wants the world to know he is a wrongfully convicted man
. He said," Sometimes my hopes have been dashed so many times, but in my heart and soul I knew if I kept fighting, one day I would get the chance to prove my innocence. That time is coming for me. The support I have had has kept me going. So many people believe in my innocence and I want to thank every one of them for believing in me"
And he added, "mum I am coming home".
